Bryant's Vera adds two more honors to impressive wrestling résumé

The only thing William Vera knew about wrestling was the WWE's version, where outlandish characters are as liable to grapple as they are to hit each other with steel chairs. So when then-Bryant coach Pete Maliarakis approached him three years ago there was immediate confusion.

"I didn't know what a point was," Vera said. "I didn't know what wrestling was at all. It was funny because I asked my coach, 'Are there any chairs involved?' I didn't know anything about it."

He ended up learning pretty quickly. Vera went 5-2 that first season, but lost just one more PSAL match thereafter and won the PSAL individual title at 135 pounds over the winter.

On Monday night, he was honored with the PSAL Wingate Award, given annually to the best senior in a given sport at a ceremony at St. Francis College in Brooklyn. Vera was also the one of the first recipients of the Become Your Own Dream wrestling scholarship, which puts $1,000 toward college.

"It's amazing and I'm very grateful, because [the scholarship] opens many doors," Vera said. "I don't come from a lot of money and that really helps me a lot."

He was equally honored to earn the Wingate. Back during his freshman season, after Maliarakis discovered Vera working out in the gym instead of going to lunch like his classmates, Bryant's team captain at the time spoke about the Wingate Award and its prestige. On the way to St. Francis College on Monday night, Vera phoned his old friend to tell him he was thinking about the speech he heard three years ago.

"I never paid it much attention then," Vera said. "He told me what a great honor it was to have it."

It was current coach Fred Dreier who told Vera about the scholarship. He will use it next year at Mount St. Vincent, where Vera will be part of the Riverdale school's first wrestling team.

After college, he has thought about training in mixed martial arts. He attended a wrestling camp in Somers, N.J., with current UFC star Urijah Faber and has followed the former World Extreme Cagefighting champion's career since then.

"A lot of people told me that, 'why don't you do MMA?'" Vera said. "Who knows? I watch it on TV. I love it."

And he knows now: no steel chairs necessary.

Mike Novogratz receives his USA Wrestling Man of the Year award from USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender and President James Ravannack.

Mike Novogratz of New York, N.Y., who has been an innovative leader in promoting wrestling and raising funds for the sport, has been named Man of the Year by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for wrestling in the United States. This award recognizes an outstanding man for his contributions to the sport of wrestling.

Novogratz serves as the Team Leader for Freestyle Team USA during the 2009-2012 quadrennium, and has been part of the staff at the last two World Championships. He will lead the freestyle delegation at the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, as well as the U.S. freestyle team at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.

He is the driving force behind the Beat the Streets Gala events, which raises money for youth and high school wrestling in New York City. Novogratz has developed a wrestling match as part of the Gala. In 2010, an all-star dual was held on the U.S.S. Intrepid aircraft carrier, raising $800,000. In 2011, a USA vs. Russia dual meet was held in Times Square, the first sports event ever held in this famous setting, raising over $1 million.

Novogratz has been a leader and major financial supporter of the Beat the Streets program in New York City, which has placed dozens of wrestling programs in high schools and junior high schools in the city. This program is now being launched in many other cities.

Novogratz has been a leader in the development of the Living the Dream Medal Fund, which was launched in 2009, serving as a steward for the program, which established the fund and assists in its financial support. World and Olympic medalists for the United States receive bonuses from this fund, with a guarantee of $250,000 for any American gold medalist in wrestling at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Novogratz was named as an Outstanding American by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2007.

He was a Virginia state runner-up as a high school wrestler, and competed for Princeton University in college, reaching the round of 12 at the NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships.

Professionally, he has been a major success in the financial services industry.

"It is flattering and was not expected. It is a very nice honor," said Novogratz. "I see my work in wrestling is to inject some energy into the sport. I got that mandate from Tom Brands years ago and I try to live up to it. Most of what I do is to get people excited about wrestling. It is also about the kids, so we can use the sport to make a difference in kids lives. That is where all the volunteerism comes in. My role is to shed some light, some resources and some enthusiasm. I love the sport. I grew up in it. You rarely meet a wrestler you don't like."

NEW YORK, N.Y. - With an opening victory from 2008 Olympic champion Henry Cejudo and an inspired performance throughout the lineup, the United States defeated Russia in a freestyle wrestling dual meet in Times Square on Thursday.

The event was held in Duffy Square in New York City, located in the historic Times Square setting. Thousands of people packed the seats and stood around the raised stage, as thousands of others watched on a large screen overlooking the scene. The event was held as part of the Beat the Streets Gala, a fundraiser for local wrestling programs. BTS leader Mike Novogratz announced over $1 million was raised today.

"Times Square. America. Wrestling. That was the difference today," said National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones. "The training, the confidence, the relaxed atmosphere. The team energy was good. We were intent on winning today. They were going to get this. They would not be denied."

Cejudo won his first time on the mat since his dramatic victory at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. He stopped Junior World bronze medalist Rasul Mashezov, 2-0, 4-3 at 55 kg. He had a key three-point move late in the second period to claim the period and capture the match.

"I feel like a wrestler again. It's a good start. I'm not where I was in 2008 but I will get there. I want to do it again for my country. I am a patriotic American," said Cejudo.

Russia rebounded at 60 kg/132 lbs., with Rasul Murtazaliev defeating 2009 U.S. World Team member Shawn Bunch, 3-0, 3-0.

The U.S. took a lead in the next match, one which it would never surrender. 2010 World Team member Brent Metcalf stopped Magomedmurad Gadzhiev of Russia, 1-0, 4-1, 1-0. Metcalf scored the winning the winning takedown in the third period of a competitive bout.

At 74 kg/163 lbs., 2010 U.S. Open champion Jordan Burroughs won his first match ever facing a Russian opponent, stopping Aniuar Geduev of Russia, 1-0, 2-1. Burroughs was able to get his effective double leg attack to work against a strong opponent.

Russia closed the gap to 4-2, when X Junior World champion Andrey Valiev of Russia defeated 2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert, 3-1, 3-2 at 84 kg/185 lbs. Valiev won the key positions in a close match.

The U.S. victory was clinched at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., when 2009 U.S. World Team member Jake Varner stopped Shamil Akhmedov of Russia, 5-0, 0-1, 4-0. Varner had a strong third period to put the match away. Akhmedov defeated Varner by injury default in a bout in Russia earlier this year, when Varner was unable to complete the bout.

The final U.S. win came at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., when 2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev swept Barsag Kesaev in two straight periods, 3-0, 3-1. Dlagnev avenged an loss to Kesaev earlier this season in Russia.

The USA vs. Russia dual meet was being billed as The Battle on Broadway, with "New York Is Wrestling" as the theme of this year's event. The event was free to the public, and was streamed live on TheMat.com and Flowrestling.

Each year, the Beat the Streets Gala is held to celebrate wrestling and raise funds for Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc., the successful program which has provided wrestling opportunities for thousands of middle school and high school students in New York City.

A card of eight exhibition matches featuring young athletes who wrestle in the Beat the Streets youth program, as well as high school wrestlers from the Public School Athletic League was held prior to the match. Results will be posted shortly.

U.S. and Russian lineups set for freestyle dual meet, part of the "Beat The Streets Gala" In New York

April 24, 2011- A host of World, Olympic and NCAA Champions are included in the final lineups announced today for the freestyle wrestling dual meet between the United States and Russia, part of the 2011 Beat the Streets Gala on Thursday, May 5 at New York's Times Square. The event will be held in Duffy Square in New York City, located in the historic Times Square setting at 46th Street. The event is free to the public, and will also be streamed live on TheMat.com by USA Wrestling and be shown on the single largest facing LED screen in Times Square.

The USA vs. Russia freestyle wrestling dual meet will begin at 6:00 p.m., following a card of exhibition matches featuring young athletes who wrestle in the Beat the Streets youth program, as well as high school wrestlers from the Public School Athletic League, which will begin at 3:00 p.m.

The U.S. team will include:

• 2008 Olympic champion Henry Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who competes at 55 kg/121 lbs. This will be Cejudo's first competition since winning the Olympic gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

• 2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert (Evanston, Ill./New York AC) will wrestle at 84 kg/185 lbs. Herbert, who also competed in the 2010 World Championships, is coming off his third straight U.S. Open title on April 9 in Cleveland. He was a two-time NCAA champion and a Hodge Trophy winner at Northwestern.

• 2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) will compete at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Dlagnev won his first career U.S. Open title this year. He captured two NCAA Div. II national titles for Nebraska-Kearney.

• Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC), a member of the 2010 U.S. World Team, will represent the USA at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Metcalf was a two-time NCAA champion and a Hodge Trophy winner for Iowa.

• Members of the 2009 U.S. World Team competing in New York will be Shawn Bunch (Columbus, Ohio (Gator WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Jake Varner (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Bunch was a college star at Edinboro, while Varner won two NCAA titles for Iowa State.

• At 74 kg/163 lbs., the USA will be represented by Jordan Burroughs (Sicklerville, N.J./Sunkist Kids). Burroughs won his second career NCAA title for Nebraska in March, received the Hodge Trophy, then captured his first U.S. Open national freestyle title in April.

"We have a great American team for this event," said USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones. "When the Russians come to town, we don't mess around. We are putting a strong team out there."

The U.S. team will be coached by Jones, along with past Olympic head coach Bobby Douglas of Ames, Iowa. Mike Novogratz of New York, N.Y. is the Team Leader.

Russia is the reigning World Team Champion in freestyle wrestling. Its lineup for the New York City dual meet features a European champion and four Junior World champions and will be very competitive.

Nariman Israpilov, a 2009 European champion, is on the Russian roster at 55 kg/121 lbs. Past Junior World champions in the Russian lineup include Israpilov, plus Magomedmurad Gadzhiev at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Andrey Valiev at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Shamil Akhmedov at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Rounding out the Russian roster are young talents Rasul Murtazaliev at 60 kg/132 lbs., Aniuar Geduev at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Barsag Kesaev at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. All three have won medals at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix, considered one of the world's toughest international competitions.

A U.S. lineup featuring an Olympic champion and three past Hodge Trophy winners will face a Russian lineup showcased by four Junior World champions.

"Russia is the bullseye for us, and we are excited for every chance we can get to wrestle against them," said Jones. "We know that in our preparation to be the best in the world, we have to knock the Russian wrestlers off. They are very good. We have to be at our very best and ready to go when we face them."

Each year, the Beat the Streets Gala is held to celebrate wrestling and raise funds for Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc., the successful program which has provided wrestling opportunities for thousands of middle school and high school students in New York City.

"Crossroads of The World" To Serve As Unique Setting For Two of the World's Athletic Powers As Part of The 2011 "Beat The Streets" Gala

New York, April 20, 2011 - "Beat The Streets," the New York City-based not-for-profit organization that has brought wrestling to thousands of middle and high school students in New York City, along with USA Wrestling and the New York City Department of Education, today announced their most unique event ever, a freestyle wrestling match featuring some of the world's greatest Olympic-class wrestlers, to be held in Duffy Square in New York's Times Square on Thursday, May 5.

The freestyle wrestling dual meet between defending team world champion Russia and the United States, will be the featured competition for the 2011 Beat the Streets Gala and Benefit, which will be held following the dual meet at the Hard Rock Café. It is being billed as The Battle on Broadway, with "New York Is Wrestling" as the theme of this year's event, which traditionally raises several hundred thousand dollars for programs in five boroughs of New York City. The event is free to the public, and will also be streamed live on TheMat.com by USA Wrestling and be shown on the single largest face LED screen in Times Square.

"There is no grander setting than Times Square to feature some of the world's greatest athletes and to raise awareness for our program, which has given thousands of boys and girls the ability to be more physically fit and learn the life lessons that are essential for success in today's ever-changing world," said Mike Novogratz, Beat The Streets Chairman of the Board. "This event, outdoors in Duffy Square, will provide us with a very unique way to expose our program to thousands who may not be aware of our work, so we are very appreciative of all involved from the City and the Times Square Alliance, as well as USA Wrestling, for helping make this happen."

PSAL wrestles hard at states, three nearly place
Division II records highest-ever team finish

ALBANY, New York (February 28^th, 2011) – The New York State Federation of Secondary School Wrestling Championships were held Friday and Saturday February 25^th and 26^th at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. The New York City Public Athletic League qualified 15 wrestlers in each of the two Divisions. Full results are available at www.beat-the-streets.org.

PSAL Wrestling Commissioner Larry Cantor said, "First off, I am so proud of our guys. They really wrestled their hearts out and showed that New York City can compete on the state level. We should take a lot of confidence from this tournament heading into the spring season and going into next year, as well."

The three best-performing student-athletes were Allen Cornelius, a Senior from Hostos Lincoln who competed at 130 lbs. in Division II, Jorje Jimenez, a 145 lbs. Junior from Lehman in Divison I, and Brooklyn Tech 215 lbs. Junior Patryk Kopczynski. They paced the way for the PSAL contingent by winning two matches each and advancing to the placing round of their respective weight classes.

Winning one match each were Cheick Ndiaye (Brooklyn International - 96 lbs. Division II), Abubakarr Sow (Brooklyn International - 119 lbs. Division II), Deuly Espinal (Grand Street Campus - 125 lbs. Division I), McZiggy Richards (Wingate - 189 lbs. Division I), and Faheem Simpson (Eagle Academy - 285 lbs. Division II).

Both PSAL teams finished with 10 points and placed 11^th out of 12 teams in their respective divisions. This marks the highest finish for the PSAL in the eight year history of the small-school Division II tournament.

The PSAL first competed at the state tournament in 1981 and has finished in the bottom two every year except 2005, when the large-school Division I team recorded its highest-ever finish, placing 10^th of 12. Prior to 2004, there was only one division at the state tournament.

Olympic and World Champion Wrestler, Menlo College Coach to Lead Clinic in NYC

BOULDER, Colo. February 23, 2011 Arno P. Niemand, longtime wrestling proponent, author, historian, and member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, today announced that the popular Marcie Van Dusen Women's Wrestling Technique Tour 2011 will launch on March 5, in New York City.

Event Description: Marcie Van Dusen, 2008 Olympian and current head coach of the women's wrestling program at Menlo College, will be holding a freestyle clinic followed by a meet-and-greet session for parents. The event is for girls and women who want to learn more about freestyle wrestling, and will be held in conjunction with the Beat the Streets Girls Freestyle Tournament, which will serve as recruiting tool for the women's wrestling program at Menlo College.

Event Open To: Clinic is targeted to high school and middle school female wrestlers, but is open to all wrestlers and coaches.

When: March 5, 2011. Registration and check-in begin at 9:30 am 6 pm.

About Arno Niemand

Mr. Niemand is a 1956 graduate of Cornell, where he was on the wrestling team. He was later inducted into the Cornell Hall of Distinguished Wrestling Alumni. He went on to earn his MBA in 1958 from the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia. Throughout his life, Mr. Niemand has continued to support the sport of wrestling, and in 2008 received the FILA Gold Star, which is the highest award given to an individual by the world governing body of wrestling. In 2009, he inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, earning the Order of Merit.

As previous owner and chairman of Body Bar Inc., Niemand has sponsored the USA Wrestling Women's National Team since 2003.

Brooklyn Tech wins team title, Grand Street Campus runner-up, Wingate 3^rd

NEW YORK, New York (February 14^th, 2011) The Large School City Championships were held Saturday and Sunday February 12^th and 13^th at the Michael J. Petrides School on Staten Island to determine the 15 wrestlers who will attend the Division I New York State Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations state tournament on February 25^th-26^th. The Small School City Championships were held Sunday, February 6^th and those champions qualified for the Division II state tournament being held simultaneously. PSAL Wrestling Commissioner Larry Cantor said, "We saw an incredible display of skill and guts out there today. I am really looking forward to Albany [the State Tournament] in two weeks. The amount of progress we've seen over the past few years is amazing. New York City wrestling is on the move!"

Brooklyn Tech won the team title with 205.5 points, following up their Team Dual Meet title from earlier in the season. Grand Street Campus took 2^nd place in the team standings with 174 points while Wingate Educational Campus took 3^rdwith 117.5. Defending champion Curtis came in 5^th with 73.5.

The Most Outstanding Wrestler Award, as voted on by the coaches, was awarded to sophomore Santo Curatolo (Tottenville) who avenged his Mayor's Cup finals loss against Keanu Thompson from Grand Street Campus in the 112-pound final. Curatolo scored a takedown in the closing seconds to win 7-5.

Seung Choi of Francis Lewis won the Most Falls In the Least Amount of Time trophy for securing four pins in a cumulative time of 5:14.

Brooklyn Tech co-captain and 215-pound champion Patryk Kopczynski said, "It was pretty good. There was lots of competition and the champions, they deserved to win. Now we have to go to states and win there, too." He added, "I'm proud of our guys even if they didn't win [an individual title], everyone pitched in and everybody deserves part of the team title."

Farrell Battles Way to 5^th Straight NYC Mayor's Cup Wrestling Title
Public, private, and Catholic schools compete together in prestigious all-city competition

NEW YORK, New York (February 2^nd, 2011) The 8^th Annual NYC Mayor's Cup tournament saw the best high school wrestlers in New York City clash on the mats at the 369^th Harlem Armory this past Saturday and Sunday. Fifteen boys and 10 girls won titles in the Varsity and Girls Divisions with Monsignor Farrell winning the overall team title ahead of runner-up Brooklyn Tech. This year's event was hosted by the Harlem Children's Zone and sponsored by the Metropolitan Wrestling Association, NYC & Company, and Beat the Streets Wrestling. Beat The Streets (BTS) Chairman of the Board Mike Novogratz said, "It is extremely exciting to see true city champions crowned. With almost 75 schools and one champ per weight class, the winners really accomplished something impressive. Congratulations to them."

This year's tournament set records for participation in both overall numbers and in the Girls Division. More than 400 boys competed in the Varsity Division with nearly 50 grapplers in the Girls. When adding the number of participants from the Middle School Dual Meet Tournament and last week's Novice and Varsity 'B' Divisions, over 1,000 student-athletes took part in the various Mayor's Cup wrestling competitions.

"With the help and guidance of Beat the Streets, NYC public school wrestling has achieved impressive results in growing both the number of student-athletes wrestling and the quality of that wrestling," said Eric Goldstein, CEO of School Support Services for the NYC Department of Education. "The DOE recognizes that wrestling brings discipline, focus, and determination to our student-athletes and that these important skills carry over into the classroom, further preparing them for success beyond high school."

The Harlem Armory played host to the tournament for the fourth time, extending a valuable partnership for NYC wrestling. "Having it all in one location, under one roof makes it a legitimate city-wide tournament," said Volunteer of the Year Award namesake, John Welch.

BTS Chief Operating Officer Bill Crum agreed, saying, "It's very important for us, the tournament, and the kids to be able to utilize such a large facility with such an accommodating staff. They were absolutely great and we look forward to working with them again next year and beyond." Crum also wanted to give thanks to the Catholic and Independent schools for their participation and assistance. "Without them and their support, this kind of operation is not possible. We are very fortunate to have such good relationships with our friends in the NYC wrestling community."

BTS has been making strides in expanding participation amongst girls, and this year's Girls Division showed the fruits of that labor. Head girls coach Cheryl Wong said, "The fact that 50 girls wrestled today gives me hope that more and more girls are learning to walk confidently and stand up for themselves, facing and overcoming their fears on a daily basis. It's a big step in the right direction."

This unique annual event brings together teams and athletes from public, private, and Catholic high schools and includes varsity and girls divisions. Over 500 athletes are expected to compete. Awards will be given out to the top eight place winners in each of the 15 weight classes – medals for 1^st through 4^th place, and certificates for 5^th through 8^th. Team scores will be kept and the following awards will be given:

Niemand. Beat the Streets (BTS) will be holding an all-girls freestyle tournament the following day on Sunday, March 6^th, 2011. Both events will take place at the BTS Manhattan Training Center at 145 Thompson St. in New York City's SoHo neighborhood.

Marcie Van Dusen is the Head Women's Wrestling Coach at Menlo College in northern California. Crum named Chief Operating Officer for Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc.

NEW YORK, New York (January 7^th, 2011) – Mike Novogratz, Chairman of the Board of Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc. (BTS), today announced changes in the organization's management structure.

Bill Crum, one of the organization's founders and Senior Advisor since its inception, has been named Chief Operating Officer. He takes over program supervisory responsibilities from Brian Giffin who is leaving to pursue business interests in the Midwest.

Crum is the former Vice President of USA Wrestling where he was a board member for 20 years and a former Executive Director within the Boys and Girls Clubs of America movement. Along with Board members Rich Ranalli and Al Bevilacqua, former Treasurer Rob Schoenberg, and others, Crum founded both the Beat the Streets movement and Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc. beginning with a springtime club in 1999. Novogratz joined the movement in 2003. Since that time the organization has added 35 new High School Programs and 60 Middle School programs in New York City. Additionally, BTS sponsors several city-wide training centers in the off-season as well as a program that has sent over 2,000 city kids to summer wrestling programs over the last four years.

"I'm excited to take on the responsibility for overseeing the programs for Beat the Streets. Bringing all that the sport of wrestling has to offer young athletes from urban neighborhoods has been the centerpiece of my professional life since 1994. Beat the Streets has seen remarkable growth in New York City. Nearly 200 middle and high school student-athletes to participate

NEW YORK, New York (November 10, 2010)  Beat the Streets Wrestling (BTS) announced today that they will be holding an extensive series of clinics December 27^th-30^th, 2010. The featured guest is 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist, Jeff Blatnick.

There will be three sessions per day for four days, with all activity taking place at the Manhattan Training Center at 145 Thompson St, New York, NY. Other guest clinicians include Royce Alger, Greg Strobel, Mike Clayton, and Damion Logan. All questions regarding the camp should be directed to the Beat the Streets office at (212) 777-5702.

"This is an amazing opportunity for our student-athletes to work with and learn from some of the best wrestlers in US history," said BTS Executive Director, Brian Giffin. "It's not every day an Olympic Champion or multiple time national champion walks through the door and they are all really great coaches, as well. We're thrilled to have all of our guest clinicians for this unique camp."

There will be four days of intense instruction and training, with three sessions per day 9 AM, 11:30 AM, and 2:30 PM. Participants will attend all four days at their allotted session time. Each session will be open to the first 60 wrestlers who register online at www.gimpsoftware.com and the cost is $10 per wrestler. Registration opens December 13th and will close as each session reaches capacity.

Jeff Blatnick was the 1984 Greco-Roman Olympic Champion. He was also a 2x NCAA Division II National Champion at Springfield College. Blatnick has served as a television analyst for numerous Olympic games and has had a successful career as a public speaker.

Royce Alger was a 2x NCAA National Champion and 3x Big Ten Champion at the University of Iowa. He was twice named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Year. Alger was a two-time freestyle World Cup champion and silver medalist at the World Championships. He won three U.S. Open titles and was a two-time Pan American Champion. He also served stints as an assistant coach for the University of Iowa and the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team.

Greg Strobel was a 2x NCAA National Champion and 3x PAC 8 Champion at Oregon State University. He is currently the Assistant Athletics Director at Lehigh University and was the head wrestling coach from 1994-2008. He also served as an Olympic coach in 1996 and 2000. Strobel was named United States Olympic Committee Coach of the Year in 1998 and the 2009 USA Wrestling Man of the Year.

Mike Clayton was a four-year letter winner and NCAA qualifier at the United States Naval Academy. He is currently the head wrestling coach at the Stevens Institute of Technology and has served in that position since 2007. He was named 2008 NWCA Division III Coach of the Year and the 2009 Centennial Conference Coach of the Year. Prior to his time at Stevens, Clayton was an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy and the head coach at Newport News Apprentice School.

Damion Logan was a 2x All-American at the University of Michigan. He currently serves as the head assistant coach at the Stevens Institute of Technology, having previously served in the same position at the University of Pennsylvania.

Going Deep: Ravens' Ray Lewis and Kelly Gregg use wrestling background to succeed in the NFL

Ray Lewis’ eyes were like saucers. He wore the look of a warrior.

But Lewis wasn’t sizing up a tight end going over the middle. He wasn’t trying to dislodge a running back from the ball. The Baltimore Ravens all-world linebacker wasn’t even on the field of play, nor was he talking about football.

Decked out in gray sweat pants and a black University of Miami sweatshirt, Lewis was clearly intense when speaking about a sport close to his heart, one that he says has made him the ferocious and technically sound NFL player he is today: wrestling.

“That has been my key for a long time,” said Lewis, who won the Florida state title at 189 pounds in 1993 while at Kathleen High School in Lakeland. “Wrestling is still one of the reasons why I swivel my hips; it’s been everything for me.

“The principles that you learn in wrestling, none of that changes. It carries over, and if you stick to those things, the low man always wins.”

Lewis isn’t alone.

The number of past and present pro football players who have a high school or college wrestling background is sizable. It includes Hall of Famers Ronnie Lott, Bruce Smith and Larry Csonka, former Pro Bowl players such as Bo Jackson and Tony Siragusa and current players Roddy White, Adam Vinatieri and former Cedar Cliff standout Coy Wire. Former Cedar Cliff star Steve Sefter was an all-America wrestler at Penn State and a defensive end on Joe Paterno’s first national championship football team.

Other NFL stars, such as former Pittsburgh guard Carlton Haselrig — who won six NCAA titles, three in Division I and three in Division II — and current New England guard Stephen Neal, a two-time NCAA champ from Cal Bakersfield, didn’t play football in college but made the transition to the rugged NFL trenches.

For Lewis, this elite fraternity extends across the locker room. Ravens nose tackle Kelly Gregg, winner of three straight Oklahoma state heavyweight titles while at Edmond Memorial and then Edmond North High School from 1993 to <ze>¤’95, knows the benefits wrestling has had on his football career.

“There are a lot of good wrestlers that come through here,” Gregg said. “Honestly, I don’t think I would still be playing now if it wasn’t for my wrestling background.”

Hand in hand

Football and wrestling seem like totally different disciplines, but they are very similar in many ways.

If you are a linebacker, like Lewis, you use your hands to fend off blockers and zero in on ball carriers. If you are an offensive or defensive lineman, in the case of Gregg, you occupy space and don’t want to get blown backward off the ball.

Lewis and Gregg have used the techniques they learned on the high school mats to make the transition from wrestling to football.

Lewis, who was drafted out of Miami by the Ravens in 1996, has terrorized opposing players throughout his 15-year career. He has amassed more than 1,500 tackles, has been named to the Pro Bowl 11 times, and even bagged Super Bowl MVP honors in 2001.

Some of those numbers can be attributed to brute strength and his unmatched determination and passion toward the game. But that only scratches the surface of what makes a Lewis tackle so textbook.

He wraps up. He doesn’t let go. He rarely, if ever, loses a battle and almost never lets a running back or receiver wiggle away.

And he does all of this after taking on a bigger lineman. But that doesn’t bother Lewis, who was accustomed to moving up one and sometimes two weight classes while wrestling in high school.

“[Wrestling] teaches you what most people want to do, which is make your hips and butt work for you,” said Lewis, demonstrating a wrestling shoot position into a one-legged takedown. “You always want to go low; you never want to walk up to an opponent standing up.

“Everything has to be engaged. You have to be locked and loaded. That is what makes you shift so easy. Football is that natural shoot and tackle.”

Lewis hasn’t forgotten the basics, and neither has Gregg.

Throughout his wrestling and football careers, Gregg has been undersized. Yet he finished his high school wrestling career with a 58-match winning streak and a 23-0 season to capture his third state wrestling title.

Listed at a generous 6-0, he could have chosen either direction — a football or wrestling scholarship — in college. He chose football and never looked back.

“Wrestling is my favorite sport, but when the University of Oklahoma comes to a kid in Oklahoma, I mean, every kid wants to play for the Sooners,” Gregg said. “There are a lot more opportunities in football than there are in wrestling.”

True. But that doesn’t stop college coaches at high-profile programs from swooping in and picking up wrestlers to help carry their football teams to a BCS title.

Ohio State’s Jim Tressel is one example. He has stated on more than one occasion to local high school recruits and coaches that he would rather recruit a football player who has a wrestling background than one who doesn’t.

Although it is too tough to handle both sports at the college level, Tressel admires the work ethic and toughness wrestlers display. To him, they are a different breed of athlete.

Gregg tried to double dip during his freshman year in college. He signed up to wrestle for OU after the Sooners went 5-5-1 in football, but it was a short stint. The following year, he was back to focusing on opposing running backs and his days on the mat were done.

But not forgotten.

Gregg never lost what he learned while wrestling. And it’s the main reason he has been a member of the Ravens for 10 seasons after being drafted by Cincinnati and playing one full year in Philadelphia.

“It’s balance and hand placement,” said Gregg, who has 503 tackles since joining the Ravens. “You are in a lot of close contact with other guys. You have to have a lot of leverage when you are a defensive lineman. There are a lot of correlations between football and wrestling.

“I tell a lot of young kids that play football to wrestle. There is no reason to specialize until you get to college.”

Unmatched toughness

Imagine sitting in your bedroom and pulling out a deck of cards. For every card you pull, you do situps and pushups to match the number on the card.

Now imagine going through the deck one, two and sometimes three times in one night. That is what Lewis did, according to Gary Lineberger, who was an assistant football coach at Kathleen High when Lewis was there and is now the athletic director at the school.

“He was the same guy you see on Sunday afternoon,” Lineberger said. “That work ethic was always there, and I think wrestling and football went hand in hand for Ray.

“He always walked out on the football field with a smile on his face. He never asked for a day off. He always wanted to be out there.”

And usually was.

His senior year, Lewis played linebacker, returned punts and kickoffs and played tailback when two other players got hurt. He ran for more than 800 yards that year.

Lewis never lacked stamina. He always embraced big-game situations, even winning two games that year with kick returns. But it was the discipline he learned on the wrestling mat that allowed him to perform and get everything out of his body on the field.

A true wrestler in any other sport, it’s like night and day,” Lewis said. “Being a pure wrestler, it’s a different commitment.”

Gregg understands.

When he was in high school, he wrestled in season and all summer. Without a break, he went into football season and started the process all over again, never missing a beat.

Gregg’s work ethic and extreme will and desire to overcome his height, both in football and wrestling, are what stand out to Archie Randall, Gregg’s summer wrestling coach and now the wrestling coach at Oklahoma City University.

“He came to me and said he wanted to be on our summer nationals team,” Randall said. “I was like ‘OK, Kelly,’ and was thinking ‘Yeah, right.’

“He made the team and won four national freestyle championships. I always tell people that wrestling is good for shoulder strength and keeping you in position. That is what you want for a defensive lineman. Kelly was one of those one-in-a-million [athletes] you get.”

And Gregg can go all day.

When he feels tired at a Ravens practice, he always looks back on his wrestling career for inspiration. Immediately, he comes to life.

There is just no comparison between going six minutes on the mat during a practice, running sprints, going back for another six minutes and then going to another stamina-building drill.

“You are out there by yourself, all alone,” Gregg said. “There is no help there for you. No team can bail you out. It’s a very individual sport, and how much work you put into it is how much you get out of it. It’s a tough business.

“I always tell myself that, if I can make it through a wrestling practice, I can make it through any football practice. You are there with no breaks. Wrestlers have to be tough to make it through.”

Lewis and Gregg have done that and more.

Both continue to excel on the football field. They have both probably lost a step, but they make up for that with experience and being smarter.

And never forgetting their roots on the mat.

Harlem Jets Elementary School Wrestlling Program

Wrestling season has started and the Jets wrestling program is kicking off!

Anthony Constantino is our head coach again this year. Anthony teaches math at Kappa IV middle school where we host the program. He captained Columbia University's wrestling team and qualified twice for the NCAA tournament. In high school he placed in the Ohio State Championships four times and was nationally ranked.

We are initiating the elementary school program for kids in grades 1-5 beginning December 4 at Kappa IV from 10-11.30 am. We expect the sessions will continue every Saturday (excluding holiday weeks) through the end of January. The focus will be on fun and fundamentals as opposed to formal competition. We will consider involving the kids in "events" with other elementary school programs depending on the level of interest.

Kappa IV is located at 6 Edgecombe Avenue at 135th street in Harlem next to the 135 th street subway stop on the B/C subway lines.

There will be no charge for the program. We recommend that parents purchase wrestling shoes and headgear for their kids.

All participants are required to:

1) Fill out and submit the attached permission slip.

2) Purchase a USA Wrestling Athlete Card and submit a copy. The card costs $34 and provides insurance for any USA Wrestling sponsored event through August 2011. Instructions to obtain the card at the USA Wrestling site themat.com are attached. Please select BTS Harlem Jets as your child's club when purchasing the card.

Parents are welcome to volunteer as coaches. All coaches are required to:

BTS Places 4th at Long Island Duals

Beat the Streets Wrestling – NYC had a successful showing with a 4-2
record, and 4th place overall finish at the Long Island Duals this
weekend, November 13-14th.

The LI Duals held at Eastport South Manor HS were comprised for 16 teams
from Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut. The dual meeting format
tournament was sponsored by Long Islands Razor Wrestling Club.

The BTS team included 30+ student-athletes representing all 5 boroughs.
Jorge Jiminez from Lehman HS in the Bronx was awarded the Outstanding
Wrestler Award for his weight class of 152lbs. Team Co-Coach Steve
Flanagan was quoted as saying "This is a good building block moving into
the HS season and eventually NYS Tournament. We proved this weekend that
NYC not only has individuals that can compete at the highest of levels,
but that we're building stronger teams and growing as a whole."

John Zarcone, Co- Head coach, when asked about his feeling at the
tournaments conclusion said "This is a new NYC. We have more dedicated
coaches than in the past years and the kids are feeding off that energy
of off season work. Hopefully we can keep this momentum moving into the
last part of the HS Season; it's still early."

Mike Torriero, BTS Training Center Manager explained "…this is a good
first step, but it's still only a first step in a long journey. These
kids competed well on the mat this weekend, but there is a lot of work
to be done in the big picture. This is a good feeling and it re-charged
our batteries a bit, but this isn't the finish line; it's merely the
beginning."

New York City was also represented at the event by the Big Blue
Wrestling Club and Lions Wrestling Club.

memorable contribution, in the amount of a $2,500 Responsible Sports™
Community Grant. Beat The Streets is hoping to be one of them. Community
Grants are part of Liberty Mutual's Responsible Sports program, which is
an ongoing effort championing and celebrating responsibility in youth
sports. This community-based program offers meaningful, easy-to-use
educational resources for youth sports parents and coaches, including
access to on-the-field game and practice preparation tools, as well as
self-paced online coursework filled with learning tools, videos, and
topics addressing youth sports issues.

"The Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports program targets many of the
issues we see happening at youth sporting events by shining a positive
light on what it means to be a responsible coach and a responsible

Beat the Streets is registered for the Responsible Sports program. They
are encouraging individual community members to complete one of the
self-paced online courses (Responsible Coaching and Responsible Sport
Parenting) and take a 10-question review quiz. Every completed quiz is
worth one point. The organizations that earn the most points at the end
of the grant period, in this case [May 31st/November 30th], in each of
the three divisions will earn one of the 20 grants. Youth sports
organizations (club programs, park and recreation departments, etc.) are
competing for one of 14 $2,500 grants in two divisions, large and small,
based upon the number of players. And six school athletic programs will
earn a $5,000 grant, for a total
of 20 Responsible Sports Community Grants to be awarded this
[spring/fall]. The more people each registered organization gets to
complete the courses, the greater its chances of winning.

Coaching legend and champion person Joe Campo passes away at 85

I received an email today from my friend Jose Campo, who is a very successful high school wrestling coach out in the San Diego area. Jose let me know that his father, Joe Campo, had passed away last night at the age of 85.

A part of my job at USA Wrestling is receiving information about people within the wrestling community who have died and to inform the wrestling family about it. Anybody who has followed high school wrestling for a long time knows that Joe Campo, who was known as “The Gov,” was one of the greatest high school wrestling coaches in history. There will be many people who will want to know about his passing.

However, Joe Campo was also a tremendous friend of mine and a true mentor in my career within wrestling. I was sad to hear the news, and my mind wandered in all kinds of directions.

When I was growing up on Long Island in the late 1970s, Joe Campo was already a legend. He was the head coach at Brentwood Ross High School, which was one of the top teams on the Island and in the state. In fact, Brentwood Ross won the Suffolk County (Section XI) team title in my junior year in 1977. At the time, Brentwood had two high schools, Ross and Sonderling. Prior to the split, Campo was also the head coach of a combined Brentwood High School team. Brentwood wrestling was very successful for a long time under Campo’s leadership.

What I remember about the Brentwood Ross wrestlers were that they were all very strong, in great shape and had excellent technique. Brentwood was known as a tough town, and many of their wrestlers came from disadvantaged situations. Coach Campo helped these young men become outstanding athletes as well as impressive people.

At the time, everybody knew a little bit about Brentwood’s history. His program developed three great college wrestling stars, all who went to Iowa State and became national heroes. Carl Adams won two NCAA titles for the Cyclones, and Pete Galea and Bob Antonacci were also multiple All-Americans there. I met these great stars during summer wrestling camps when I was a kid. All of them talked with pride about their great wrestling coach Joe Campo.

When I was a senior at Boston University, we got a new head wrestling coach named Carl Adams. He had been coaching at the Univ. of Rhode Island for the previous two years, one of our top rivals. URI dropped wrestling, and BU was fortunate to hire Adams at the time. In my final year on the mat, I had a chance to wrestle for a great coach, who later became a business partner and close friend for life.

Carl ran successful wrestling camps which I worked at for many years. He always brought Coach Joe Campo to work at these camps, and it was there that I got to know him personally. All of the great things I heard about Joe Campo and witnessed as a opposing competitor in high school only scratched the surface. Joe Campo was a wonderful person in all aspects of life.

Coach Campo was an interesting person beyond just wrestling. When I met him, he was already considered an older coach. He did not have an impressive physique or a commanding personality. Yet when he got on the mat, he really knew his stuff and was an excellent teacher. What I liked most about him was that he was a very nice person, somebody who you immediately enjoyed spending time with. When you got to know Joe, you could sense why he was such a great coach. He was a winner because he was a great man.

After I got Jose’s email, I immediately called Carl Adams and we shared some thoughts and stories about Joe Campo. Carl remained tremendously close to him and gave him so much credit for his success. Carl’s first thought when we spoke today about Coach Campo is that he was “an unbelievable person.”

Carl said that he was so respected by his wrestlers that they came up with the nickname “the Gov” because of his positive influence in their lives. He also noted that Coach Campo was admired by athletes and coaches from opposing teams. He made an impact on so many people through his involvement in wrestling.

I quickly did a web search on Joe Campo, mostly looking for a good picture of him to go with this column. I discovered some information about him that I did not know. Wrestling USA Magazine, which has great stats on high school wrestling, places him at No. 22 on the list of all-time high school wins with 452. His head coaching career spanned from 1957-1987, a total of 30 years covering teams in upstate New York, Long Island and even in Alabama. His win total should be higher, because there were years when he helped coach some teams later in his life when he was not the head coach.

Another website told me that his overall dual record was 452-38 with a 261-20 record in his two decades in Brentwood. His teams won eight Suffolk County team titles, and he had nine state champions and 27 New York State place winners when New York had only one state meet. The same article explained that they recently named the gymnasium at Brentwood Ross High School in his honor. Coach Campo came back to Brentwood for the gymnasium ceremony at the age of 82, and a large number of his former athletes were there to celebrate with him.

Another article explained how Joe and his son Jose have both been inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s state chapter program, with Joe going in for New York and Jose getting honored in California. It explained how they were believed to be the first father-son combination to be so honored. Jose’s email to me explained that his father had started three different wrestling programs in New York, and that he had been elected to three different Hall of Fames.

None of this information surprised me a bit. I have always known that Joe Campo was an amazing wrestling coach. But, I also knew from personal experience how much he meant to so many people.

I often spent time with Joe Campo when I was living out East and able to attend Carl Adams’ wrestling camps on a regular basis. However, when I moved to Colorado to work with USA Wrestling, we would only see each other at the NCAA Championships. Joe would show up with his sons each year to enjoy the tournament and visit his many friends from across the country. No matter how busy I was at the NCAAs, I always seemed to run into Coach Campo for a nice conversation. He was genuinely interested in how things were going with me and my family, and he was very supportive of my efforts as a USA Wrestling staff member. I felt that every time I saw “The Gov” was a treat and a privilege for me.

This is not an obituary for Joe Campo, because I don’t have all of the information about his amazing life at this time. When the official obit becomes available, we will post it for people to see. I am sure that when you read it, you will be very impressed about what he accomplished and how many people he was able to influence.

In my own small way, I would like to honor the life of Joe Campo in a more personal way. I would like to thank Joe for all of the years of love and support, and for being such an inspiring role model. I was truly blessed to call him friend. I already miss Joe, but I feel very good that I got to know him and have him as part of my life.

New York AC Greco-Roman International moves to new venue, November 7

The New York Athletic Club has announced that the venue for its annual New York Athletic Club Greco-Roman International Championships has been changed for this year.

The event will be hosted at Martin Luther High School, which is located at 6002 Maspeth Ave, in Maspeth, Queens, N.Y. 11378. The competition will be held on Sunday, November 7.

In past years, this tournament has been held at the New York Athletic Club facility in mid-town Manhattan.

The registration and weigh-in for the tournament will still be held at the New York Athletic Club on Saturday, November 6. Registration will be at 3:00 p.m. ET, with skin checks at 3:45 p.m. and weigh-ins at 4:00 p.m.

For the second straight year, the Greco-Roman competition for the New York Athletic Club International will be held on a different weekend than the competition in men’s and women’s freestyle. The New York Athletic Club Freestyle International Championships will be held at the New York Athletic Club on November 20-21.

The official hotel for the New York Athletic Club Greco-Roman International Championships is the Crowne Plaza LaGuardia Hotel, which is 20 minutes from the venue at Martin Luther High School.

Dave Barry elected to board of National Wrestling Hall of Fame

Five new board members were elected to the Board of Governors at the semi-annual meeting held in Omaha in March. “These five individuals bring an enormous amount of experience and enthusiasm for the sport of wrestling to our board,” said Jim Keen, Chairman of the Board.

David Barry was a 2x EIWA place winner and 1^st team All-Ivy wrestler for Columbia University. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia in1987 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Georgetown University Law School in 1990. Barry is President (and Co-Principle) of Ironstate Development Company in Hoboken, New Jersey. He is currently serving as the USA Wrestling Greco-Roman Team Leader for the 2012 Olympics.

Jed Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1979, earned his Master’s in Accounting in 1980 and completed his CPA certification in May of 1980. His achievements include earning 3 varsity letters at the University of Iowa. Professionally, Brown started the Standard Nutrition Company and serves as the company’s Chief Financial Officer.

Bob Buckley graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1973, wrestling three years for hall of fame coach Bob Siddens. Serving as the president of the Dan Gable Museum Board of Directors, Buckley was chairman of the capital campaign that brought the museum from Newton, Iowa, to Waterloo, Iowa. He also led the campaign that rebuilt the Museum after the flood.

Chris McGowan received his Bachelor’s Degree from St. John’s University in 1989, earning a double major in Government and Management and earned his law degree in 2003. McGowan‘s passion for wrestling continues with volunteer work including being author of the “Kids Corner” column for Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine. He currently serves as Executive Vice President of The Siouxland Initiative (TSI).

Jay Roberts attended the University of Iowa on a partial scholarship. He graduated in 1964 earning a bachelor’s in psychology and political science. Roberts lettered three years in 1962, ‘63, & ’64 in wrestling. He then, attended Iowa Law School where he received a JD degree and began practicing law in Waterloo, Iowa in 1968. He has been closely associated with the sport of wrestling since graduation.

Dolmo wins bronze medal at Beach World Championships in Montenegro

BUDVA, Montenegro - Carlos Dolmo (Bronx, N.Y./Blast Double NY) won a bronze medal in the Over 85 kg/187.5 lbs division, the top U.S. performance at the 2010 Beach World Championships on Sunday.

Dolmo defeated K. Charalabos of Georgia, 2-1 in the bronze-medal match. It was his second career Beach World medal, to go with another bronze medal in 2007.

Dolmo finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. His only loss came in the second round to Fatjo Baro of Albania. He won two consecutive matches in the repechage to win the medal.

“It was different from past years. There was only one bronze. Traditionally, it’s been two bronze medals given,” said Dolmo.

Dolmo joins Jeff Funicello (Mesa, Ariz./American Pankration) as a two-time World bronze medalist for the United States in Beach wrestling.

Funicello was among the five U.S. athletes to compete in Budva. He was defeated in his first match in the Under 85 kg/187.5 lbs. division.

Three other U.S. competitors who were competing in their first World Championships also fell short of medal contention: Anthony Gallton (Rochester, N.Y./Downtown Fitness Club) and Stephen Franko IV (Tunkhannock, Pa./unattached) in the Under 85 kg/187.5 lbs. division and Brett Giehl (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia WC) in the Over 85 kg/187.5 lbs. division.

Franko won his first match, beating Nikcla Djurkovic of Montenegro, 2-0. He was eliminated in the next bout by Mihajlo Bajlovic of Serbia, 0-2. Gallton and Giehl dropped opening round matches.

The United States finished seventh in the 20-nation field.

“Everyone wrestled with lots of passion and drive and wanted to make our country proud,” said Dolmo.

Jesse and Corey Jantzen Clinic

Last evening, Wednesday 8/25/2010, Beat the Streets Wrestling-NYC held a
world class clinic with arguably New York and United States most
distinguished brothers from both a wrestling and academic standpoint –
Jesse and Corey Jantzen, both from Shoreham-Wading River HS and Harvard
University. (Corey is slated to graduate in 2012.)

Jesse is regarded in many circles as the Roger Banister of The Empire
State in the sport of wrestling. He was NY's first ever 4x Champion,
adding two 3rd place finishes as a 7th and 8th grade, a High School
National Title, and the prestigious Asics National Wrestler of the Year
at the culmination of his HS career. Upon HS graduation Jesse attended
Harvard University where he was not only a 3x NCAA All American and
National Champion (3rd, 3rd, 1st), but a 3x Academic All-American and
eventual Junior World Champion in 2005.

Corey at the time of his HS graduation was equally as dominant and
tallied Two New York State Titles, Two High School National Titles and a
plethora of national recognition for his ability to wrestle and place at
college and open level events. He's currently attending Harvard
University where he's an NCAA qualifier and considered a major threat to
win an NCAA title in every wrestling publication across the country.

Roughly 75 athletes from all 5 boroughs were represented at the
Manhattan Training Center, and the quest to become a dominant force in
NYS and the Tri-State area was, again, established with the work and
dedication that was shown last night.

Coordinator, Beat-the-Streets Wrestling Camps

Through the generosity of Beat-the-Streets Wrestling, six-three New York City middle and high school wrestlers from public, private, and parochial schools, were given the opportunity, and successfully completed a five day intensive wrestling camp at Sullivan County Community College, Loch Sheldrake, New York.

The coaching and training was offered by Bill Crum, Ryan Cooley, Mike Torriero, and Justin Hoch, Beat-the-Streets Coaching Staff, Todd Bloom, Past Wrestling Coach, Brandeis High School, Steve Flanagan, Wingate Educational Campus, and Larry Cantor, Commissioner of Wrestling, PSAL, and Coordinator, Beat-the-Streets Wrestling Camps.

Kendall Cross, 1996 Freestyle Olympic Champion, was the camp's guest clinician. He
truly motivated all present.

Within the five day wrestling period, Monday, August 9th through Friday, August 13th ten instructional sessions were presented, combined with drilling and competitive wrestling.

An intramural tournament was held on Friday morning.

Cardiovascular development included morning runs.

This camp met the needs of all levels of skills.

On Saturday the Cadet and Junior National Freestyle and Greco Roman
Championships came to a close. The last NYC wrestler was elimnated from
the competition when Monsignor Farrell's Ben Villaret lost to Nick Moore
of Iowa. 11 wrestlers from New York City competed in the competition
and Villaret earned all american honors by placing fourth in the Junior
Greco Roman Tournament. Also representing New York City were Cadets Tim
McCann, McZiggy Richards, Camillo Rodriguez, Jorje Jimenez, and Brian
Rogers, Juniors Gerardo Alvarez, Allen Cornelius, and Salih Caygan, and
Junior Females Ruth Leger and Sandy Bonilla.

Junior Freestyle Results in from Fargo

Action Continued yesterday and earlier today with the Junior Freestyle
National Tournament in Fargo, ND. NYC was represented by Gerardo
Alvarez and Allen Cornelius of Hostos Lincoln Academy and Monsignor
Farrell's Ben Villaret (who placed 4th earlier in the week in Greco
Roman). Ben advanced to the second day of the tournament, and up to
this point has won 5 matches against only 1 loss. Ben will wrestle
against Nick Moore of Iowa next as he strives to earn his second All
American honor of the week.

NYC represented itself well yesterday in the Cadet Freestyle Tournament
at the Fargodome. All 3 competitors won matches, but were eventually
eliminated. Tim McCann of Monsignor Farrell won 2 matches while Jorje

Competition continues today with the conclusion of Cadet Freestyle and

Three-Time All-American Hudson Taylor Joins Columbia Wrestling Staff

NEW YORK - Head coach Brendan Buckley has announced that three-time
All-American Hudson Taylor has joined the Columbia wrestling staff.
While at Columbia, Taylor will work primarily with the upper weights as
a volunteer coach.

"We are real happy to add Hudson Taylor, one of the nation's premiere
197 pounders over the last several years," said Buckley, the Andrew F.
Barth Head Coach of Wrestling. "As a three-time NCAA All-American,
Hudson brings tremendous credentials with him, and will make an
immediate impact on our upper-weights. Furthermore, we believe he will
be an incredible recruiting tool for us, as any upper-weight wrestler
will be hard-pressed to find a better workout partner than Hudson."

While competing at Maryland, Taylor was named the Atlantic Coastal
Conference Wrestler of the Year in both 2007-08 and 2009-10, after
winning the 197 pound title at the conference tournament. In his other
two seasons, 2007 and 2009, Taylor finished second in his weight at the
ACC's.

On the national level, Taylor was equally impressive. He finished third
in the country in 2008 and 2009, and fourth as a senior in 2010. He is
tied for fifth in career pins in the all-time NCAA record books with
87. At Maryland, he holds the school record for career pins (87),
career wins (165), and pins in a single-season (24).

Taylor's resume is equally as decorated off the mat as well. The ACC
Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2007-08 and 2009-10, he was a three-time
selection to the All-ACC Academic Team, and a three-time member of the
UMD Academic Honors Deans List. Most recently, he received an Atlantic
Coastal Conference Weaver-James-Corrigan Post-Graduate Scholarship. In
2009, Taylor was one of six student-athletes from Maryland to earn the
ACC Community Service Award in 2009.

Taylor graduated from the University of Maryland in May 2010 with a
degree in Interactive Performance Art.

Yesterday, Monsignor Farrell's Ben Villaret finished 4th in the Junior
Greco Roman National Tournament in Fargo, ND. He wrapped up the
tournament with 7 wins against only 2 losses, Ben won 4 of his matches
by fall. The National Tournament continues today with Cadet Freestyle
where Jorje Jiminez of Lehman, McZiggy Richards of Wingate, and Tim
McCann of Monsignor Farrell with attempt to duplicate Ben's All American
finish.

Trackwrestling.com is reporting that Ben Villaret defeated Patrick Budd
of Virginia by Fall in the 1st Period. With this victory, Ben's 5th of
the tournament and his 3rd pin, Ben has clinched a place in the top 4 of

NYC Wrestlers Prepare for Nationals

New York City and Beat The Streets have sent more than a half dozen elite athletes to the New York State - USA National training camp in Binghamton NY this week.

This camp is a dedicated training environment for the top wrestlers in NYS who will compete in Fargo,ND at the Asics Vaughn US National Tournament.

Summer Camp Program Kicks Off

The 2010 Summer Wrestling Program has launched and completed its first round of boys and girls at the Strong Island Wrestling Camp at Hofstra University Team and Technique Camp for Middle & High School wrestlers.

Through the generosity of our Donors and Sponsors, who have contributed to our summer program for the last few years and the tremendous financial support given by 1200 Donors & Sponsors at the 2010 Gala & Benefit aboard the USS Intrepid, has allowed us to expand our summer camp opportunities to 700 boys and girls.

Since we began the summer camp initiative in 2006, with a little over 250 boys and girls, it has become the staple of our program. Our goal is to provide middle and high school boys and girls an opportunity to leave a “hot” city enjoying a week or so on a college campus throughout the northeastern United States upgrading their skills while interacting with boys and girls from throughout the country.

Hopefully, they are having a lot of fun while learning more life skills so they continue “living the dream”.

Upcoming Camps- We have added two new camps being operated by the Beat the Streets Program at the USA Olympic Training Center with fifty wrestlers and 50 coaches who will be upgrading their USA Wrestling Bronze Certification to Silver.

The camp at Sullivan County Community College will be operated by the BTS Wrestling Inc. with an eye on using the college facilities for future competitions and camps. There is a strong possibility of partnering with them helping the college begin a college wrestling program.

A mat has been purchased for the college as they begin to develop their budget that could possibly see them beginning a program in 2012 or 2013.

The Basketball Program recruits quite heavily in New York City and has won 3 NJCAA National Basketball Championships the past 7 years and it is a great fit for our kids to continue wrestling after graduating high school.

Our mission statement is to expand wrestling from Youth through the Olympics.

NY-PA Women’s Dual Meet, June 12th

The W.O.W. Team of Pennsylvania battled our very own Beat the Streets girls this weekend in the first ever NY-PA Women's Dual Meet / Wrestle Around. Sandy Bonilla and Ruth Leger of Brooklyn put on some impressive performances with Sandy hitting a well-timed fireman's throw in her first match. Ruth went toe to toe in both her matches against Kasey Krucek of PA, with the first match going to criteria and the second match going to clinch after the 2nd period. Kasey ultimately earned the win both times. Both Kasey and Ruth will represent their home states of Pennsylvania and New York, respectively, at the upcoming Junior Nationals at the end of July.

Jessica Zarowny and Natalie Rogers also showed promise in their competition debuts. Natalie and Jessica's match went to the 3rd period with an ultimate win by Natalie based on criteria. Natalie Cortez of Brooklyn opened the dual up in a tight match against Megan Penny of PA. Honorable mention should be given to Cassidy Ferrell of PA who put an aggressive, technically sound performance in the lightweight matches of the night giving up at least 10lbs to her lightest opponent, Nyasa Bakker of Brooklyn. While Nyasa has been out due to injury recently, her performance this weekend shows promise for the coming folkstyle season.

The history of the "wrestle around" dates back to the late 1990's where Brookline High School in Massachusetts had one of the first Women's wrestling teams on the East Coast. Given that there are usually no more than 1 or 2 girls on all-male squads, holding formal Women's dual meets is difficult. Addressing this challenge, parents at Brookline organized informal "wrestle arounds" so that local girls on all-male teams could practice against people more closely matched in muscle mass.

For many female wrestlers, these informal wrestle arounds were one of very few chances they had to compete amongst other women, and to more accurately gauge how far their own wrestling had progressed when the element of male to female muscle strength was taken out of the equation.

Because female wrestlers tend to be geographically spread out and immersed in men's wrestling, programs such as the Beat the Streets Women's Program and the W.O.W. program strengthen the Women's wrestling network and awareness of the womens freestyle wrestling circuit. The World Championships have included women for decades, but many in the United States are still surprised to see women wrestling. In the interest of network-building, a picnic was held for all the competitors and their high school teams coaches after the competition this weekend.

The dual meet this weekend was photographed by professional photographers, Nick Brandreth and Kareem Black. Nick and Kareem's work will be available on www.nickbrandreth.com. Director Olivia Newman also filmed the live-action with her crew. Newman's movie, First Match, starring Beat the Streets wrestler Nyasa Bakker, is set to start shooting at the end of July. Overcome Your Adversities to Become Your Best

When I started wrestling as an eighth grader at Webb JR High School, in Hazel Park Michigan I was terrible. I was the worst wrestler on my team. The next four years I struggled with many ups and downs in this sport.

By the time I became a senior at Hazel Park High, I finally became good enough to win the Michigan state championship. With that state title, I won a full scholarship to go to the best college in the entire nation - The University of Michigan - to get my education and wrestle. (What, you don’t all agree?) You should have seen me…I thought I was one of the roughest, toughest guys around. “YEAH! I am going to go to the University of Michigan as a freshman… I was going to make the varsity team - no problem, I was state champ!”

Well, the guy I had to beat to make the varsity team was Mark Johnson (former Head Coach for the University of Illinois). Mark was a senior, captain of the team and he had a different idea of what was going to happen when he and I wrestled - much different from my idea. Mark Johnson and I wrestled almost every single day for the first four months of the season and never once, not one time, did I score a single point on him. He beat the living tar out of me every single day. You would figure after about 2 months of him beating me up that he might feel sorry for me. You know, maybe let me score one lousy point on him…No way!

In the classroom I was failing two classes. A history class and a physiology class… going down for the third count … big fat F’s (failure) all the way up through and including my midterms. There was no way I thought I could pass these courses. In fact I am sure my instructors had written me off already…”we won’t see him back”. I remember calling my mother on the phone, tears in my eyes, the whole shot; “Mom, I’m coming home, (sniff, sniff) I’m failing these two classes and Mark Johnson keeps kicking my butt in the wrestling room”. I mean I was truly as low as I could be.

But what I learned from getting through all that mess is with me today and I hope will be with me the rest of my life. What I learned is that, “yes”, Steve Fraser can do anything he wants if he really wants it bad enough. Now, the only solution I could think of was to get a tutor, which was tough for me to accept. However, my options were limited so I got a tutor. We started at square one and he basically taught me; when to study, what to study, how to study properly. I will tell you… I don’t think I have ever had a comeback like this in the sport of wrestling. I went from complete failure in these two classes - F’s on all my tests - to A’s on my final exams. I mean I was in total shock that I could make that dramatic of a comeback. Needless to say, my teachers were in shock, also.

Back in the wrestling room, I will never forget this; I finally scored on Mark Johnson. I finally took him down. It was a Friday…. December 15^th…. 3:36 in the afternoon…. arm drag…. I took him down. Two point takedown. I remember jumping up, “YEAH!” I was so excited. Now he probably just slipped on some water or something that was on the mat because he proceeded to beat me up for the next two months too.

My point is - not only is it easier for us to learn from our adversities but what we learn from them has a much greater impact and stays with us a lot longer than what we sometimes learn from our successes. Obviously it is no fun to fail but failing can be good because it forces us to change, it forces us to reevaluate, to stretch and grow. I am totally convinced that because I overcame those obstacles, those setbacks, those adversities, I have achieved a much greater level of success than I would ever have been able to accomplish if I didn’t have those experiences. I can guarantee you that without that freshman year struggle I would have never won an Olympic Gold Medal!

Olympic Training Center, Lake Placid, New York

Sunday, July 26th through Thursday, July 29th.

The emphasis of this camp will be on wrestling technique, mat strategy, and development of both the mind and body.

Transportation to, and from Lake Placid, housing, and meals are tuition free.

Participation in the camp is through meeting the stipulated criteria.

All applicants must be residents of New York City, and have been an active member of a New York City PSAL, CHSAA, or Independent School high school wrestling program.

Graduating seniors are not eligible.

The criteria are:

The first three place winners, by weight, in the 2010 Mayors Cup
The first three place winners, by weight, in the 2010 Junior/Cadet Freestyle/Greco Roman

State Championships

The first six place winners in the 2010 New York State Public School High School Wrestling Championships
The first three place winners, by weight, of the 2010 PSAL Individual Wrestling Championships
The first three place winners, by weight, of the 2010 New York City CHSAA Wrestling Championships.
The first three place winners, by weight, of the 2010 CHSAA State Championships.
The first three place winner, by weight, of the 2010 New York State Private School State Championships

If a coach feels a wrestler is worthy of attending this camp; however, does not meet the above criteria, is letter of recommendation, for consideration, can be submitted to: Larry A. Cantor, Coordinator, Beat-the-Streets Wrestling Camps, The PSAL, 44-36 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City, New York 11101.

A maximum of fifty-one wrestlers will be accepted.

If the respective wrestler accepts the invitation, a twenty-five dollar non refundable administrative fee is applicable. The fee is payable to Beat-the-Streets, and must accompany the respective application.

Please mail all applications, not later than Tuesday, June 15th to Beat-the-Streets Wrestling, 145 Thompson Avenue, New York, New York 10012.

tommorow instead of Petrides. Farrell's address is 2900 Amboy Road,
Staten Island, NY

Greco Weigh ins 730 to 830
Freestyle Weigh ins 1030 to 1130

If you plan on doing both styles make sure you have both styles added
under your online registration - i dont think many of you have done this
so please update. You can do it by clicking add event under your profile

Also there will be a $5 entry fee tommorow that we need to help pay the
facility costs
